CONSUMING MORE FRUIT is a newer approach for me. With my more watchful diet and increasing awareness of healthier choices, fresh and frozen fruit is entering my Universe.
Earlier this year, I posted a blog about an esteemed Michigan chef named Abra Berens who recently published Pulp - A Practical Guide to Cooking with Fruit. I’m thoroughly enjoying her tips and reference manual. She spent some time honing her skills over the last decade in Leelanau County. I wrote a piece this past spring as she started on her tour to promote her newest cookbook. https://www.bobadamshumorist.com/post/celebrating-fruit
Yesterday, as I was filling up my watering can and attending to the flowerpots on the front porches at our managed properties on Lake Michigan, I noticed a single pear drop to the ground not twenty feet from the back of my SUV where I was standing. This made me smile because I had just started this essay about consuming more fruit. I even heard a light thud as it hit the ground.
Do you believe in signs? I love little surprises.
I had passed by this “tree” for at least five seasons with hardly a notice. I just realized that the tree was full of good-looking small pears. I collected a dozen, and they are set out to ripen in my kitchen. I will use them in a Berens recipe that got my attention on page 306 of Pulp - Sliced pears w/salted caramel and crumbles. My research found that the pears would ripen in 7 to 10 days so this is a work in progress.
Patience is a virtue, or so they say.
