I SIGNED UP FOR A FACEBOOK account fifteen years ago. I guess I was curious about its popularity and thought I should give it a try. I was cautious, so I used a pseudo-name as I set it up.
It was purported to be a widespread way of connecting and communicating in this ubiquitous internet world. I learned that “friending” was in its DNA and soon discovered it was of little interest to me. I saw folly in the virtual chat communities and questioned their credibility. What was real? Are we this lonely needing to find a group of virtual friends? Or do we have to move our thumbs and fingers to be part of a fulfilled life? These are the questions I asked in trying to understand its popularity.
How about a good book, chatting it up at a bar, or a round of golf with friends? That is more my speed.
Privacy is in my makeup and will remain that way while I’m on the planet. I’m just not a prime candidate to get involved in this virtual social media game. Remember, there are winners and losers in the games we choose to play.
As my mother used to say, “each to their own” and “question all sources.”
A bit of wisdom on both counts.
